Kotel is a city located in Eastern Bulgaria. It is the administrative center of Kotel Municipality, Sliven District. The city is the fourth largest in the district after Sliven, Nova Zagora and Tvarditsa.
According to GRAO data as of June 15, 2023, 5254 people live in the city at their current address and 5784 people at their permanent address.
The town of Kotel is located in the middle foothills of the Eastern Stara Planina, in the flat part of a mountain valley and an important geographically and historically important pass, known as Demir Kapiya. The pass is a ”witness” to many fierce historical battles from Antiquity to our time. The distance to the regional center Sliven is 69 km.
In morpho-geographical terms, the relief of the region is hilly-foothill and mountain-valley pronounced relief with an average altitude of 300 to 1128 m above sea level.
The highest peak is Razboyna, 1128 m above sea level, which in the southwest connects with the foothills of the Icheren and Karandil Heights.
The geographical area ”Chukata” connects the Sliven Mountains with the Icheren-Zherun Heights and the Kotlen Hills. Climbing the mountain elevation of the Kotla area ”Chukarite”, leading to the Razboyna peak, in a southeasterly direction, forest and tourist eco-trails are temporarily opened to the villages of Zheravna, Neykovo and from there to the Karandila area in the Sliven Mountains.
Climate: temperate continental, with the influence of the mountainous climate zone - moderate winter, cool summer and warm and long autumn. Often, due to the mixed relief of hilly and flat terrain, short and ”painful” phenomena are observed - hail, opaque fogs, rains, strong winds, etc. The average temperature in January is 1.5 degrees, and in July - 20 degrees.
There are two reserves on the territory of the municipality:
• Kersenlika Reserve with a total area of 114.5 ha. It is located in the land of the village of Borintsi. It is a natural habitat of white fir, more than 110 years old. The buffer zone to the reserve is 89.5 ha.
• Orlitsata Reserve has an area of 559.4 ha and is located in the lands of the town of Kotel and the village of Medven. It was established with the aim of preserving the centuries-old forests of Moesian beech, habitats of rare birds of prey and a unique karst complex with numerous caves, ravines, springs and more. Its territory also includes the rock phenomenon ”Orlitsata” - a nesting place for the golden eagle. The buffer zone to the reserve covers another 114.7 ha.
The areas: Komincheto, Elenitsa, Batoyka, Chervenyatya prist, Suhi Dyal, Urushkite skali and some others are a natural source of wood, copper ore, etc.
According to legend, the town was settled after military unrest forced the population of the village of Novachka to look for a new place to settle. Once a herd of horses got lost. After a long search, the villagers found the horses grazing grass in a wonderful area, now known as ”Izvorova polyana”. Clear cold water gushed out from between the rocks. The beautiful nature, the lush pastures amazed the people and they decided to settle in this place with the scent of pine and geranium. Kotel still stands today at the important Balkan pass between Shumen and Sliven; at a distance of about 15 miles from the sea, and was probably founded around 1545 by refugees from the surrounding area.
