Samuel’s fortress
The fortress is located about 16 kilometers west of Petrich, on the banks of the river Strumeshnitsa, very close to the village of Klyuch. The fortress is associated with the famous Battle of Belasitsa, in which the Byzantine army, led by Emperor Basil II, better known in our history as the Bulgarian assassin, defeated the Bulgarian army and blinded many of our soldiers. It is believed to have been built in the period 1009-1013, during the reign of King Samuel.
The Rozhen Monastery of the Holy Nativity of the Mother of God is located a little more than 30 km from Petrich and about 7 km from Melnik. It is one of the few Bulgarian monasteries that have survived to this day. Near the monastery is the tomb of Yane Sandanski.
In addition to its long history, the area around the Rozhen Monastery is characterized by incredibly beautiful views, the waterfalls Sramezhlivets near the village of Kamena, near the village of Kashina and Leshnishki waterfall, the tunnel to the village of Kashina. Kayaking on the Struma River is also an interesting adventure that attracts tourists.
